Ardmucknish Bay, Connel

Ardmucknish Bay is around two miles wide and is situarted at the mouth of Loch Etive. Tralee Beach, which is a popular destination for visitors to the area, is situated at its northern end. Boats can be launched from the beach and there are private slipways on two caravan sites around the bay.

Shore fishing with bait will catch mainly dogfish (LSD's) with the odd flounder along the beach at Tralee. Spinning will produce mackerel and the odd sea trout in summer months.

Boat fishing is by far more productive. Drifting baits on the bottom can attract thornback rays, dogfish and gurnards. Good pollack are to be found around the islands at the mouth of Loch Etive as well as off the point at Rubha Garbh-aird, which has a series of rock pinnacles thst extend out for just under half a mile where the sea bed drops to over 30m either side of the rocks. Pollack of around 3lb can be found in and around the kelp near the surface. Bigger pollack and rock cod can be found in the deep gullies, along with wrasse and pouting. Larger baits fished on the drift will take ling and conger.

There is a well-known shipwreck in the bay, the SS Breda, which is over 400ft long and 60ft wide and lies half a mile off the eastern shore. The wreck is very popular with divers and fishing time can be limited during daylight hours. Pollack, coalfish, ling, pouting and wrasse can be caught in and over the wreck. Night-time is best for conger fishing.
